Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and oldest national park, was officially declared a protected area in 1952. It takes its name from the awe-inspiring Murchison Falls, where the mighty River Nile explodes through a narrow 7-meter gorge before plunging 43 meters into the Devil’s Cauldron—creating one of the most powerful waterfalls on Earth.
Spanning vast savannah plains, woodlands, and riverine forests, Murchison Falls National Park is teeming with wildlife and offers a classic African safari experience.
The park is home to large herds of herbivores, including:
Elephants
Giraffes
Buffaloes
Uganda Kobs
Hartebeests
Waterbucks
Bushbucks
Oribis
Warthogs
These animals roam freely across the park’s open plains and along the lush Nile riverbanks.
Often seen lounging beneath Acacia trees during the heat of the day, lions are the apex predators here. Organized into prides, they typically prey on buffaloes, kobs, and even giraffes. Females do most of the hunting, showcasing coordinated and powerful strategies.
More elusive and solitary, leopards rely on stealth and surprise. They often drag their kills into trees to avoid scavengers like hyenas and jackals. Lucky visitors may spot one napping on a tree branch.
These opportunistic scavengers play a crucial role in the ecosystem, cleaning up after larger predators and maintaining the balance.
The park’s southern sector is home to Budongo Forest Reserve, one of East Africa’s most important tropical rainforests, where you can encounter:
Chimpanzees
Olive Baboons
Patas Monkeys
Vervet Monkeys
Red-tailed Monkeys
Black-and-white Colobus Monkeys
With over 450 bird species, Murchison Falls is one of Uganda’s finest birding destinations.
Notable birds include:
Shoebill Stork (highly sought-after and elusive)
African Darter
Goliath Heron
Saddle-billed Stork
African Skimmer
Bateleur
Vinaceous Dove
Stanley Bustard
Bruce’s Green Pigeon
Rock Pratincole
Caruthers’s Cisticola
Harlequin & Blue Quails
The centerpiece of the park is the Murchison Falls, where the Victoria Nile forces its way through rock and falls into a dramatic gorge before flowing gently westward into Lake Albert. A boat cruise to the base of the falls is a must-do activity, offering close-up views of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and countless birds.
Murchison Falls is located in northwestern Uganda. It’s accessible by both road and air:
By Road: Approximately 5–6 hours from Kampala via Masindi and Kichumbanyobo Gate. A stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is highly recommended to track the only wild rhinos in Uganda.
By Air: There are three airstrips (Pakuba, Chobe, and Bugungu) served by local operators.
