Though the smallest of Uganda’s savannah parks, Lake Mburo National Park is uniquely diverse and scenic. Just 3.5 hours from Kampala along the Masaka–Mbarara highway, it offers a perfect wildlife escape with rolling Ankole hills, acacia-dotted savannah, and papyrus-fringed wetlands.
Lake Mburo is the only park in Uganda where the Impala is found, and it hosts a variety of other herbivores, including:
Zebra, Topi, Eland, Buffalo, Bushbuck, Warthog, Waterbuck
Hippos and Otters in the lake
Leopard, Spotted Hyena, African Civet, Jackals, Serval and other carnivores
At the Salt Lick viewing platform, several species gather daily to feed on the natural minerals.
The park is also home to rare papyrus endemics, best spotted in the Mazinga Swamp:
Shoebill (rare and sought-after)
Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler, Greater Swamp Warbler, Papyrus Yellow Warbler
Other commonly seen birds include:
Helmeted Guineafowl, Crested Francolin, Black-bellied Bustard, African Grey Hornbill, Emerald-spotted Wood Dove, Southern Red Bishop
The rolling hills of Ankole, lush swamps, and intense blue of Lake Mburo create a picturesque and calming landscape. Open savannahs stretch for miles, offering sweeping views and serene sunsets.
